Depending on how many of you are still needing PHP4, I will consider different solutions for the new features (mostly optimized indexing and such).
I’m developing under apache+PHP5 but I always care about being compatible with PHP4.
As you might know, however, support for PHP4 has been dropped in February; so how is the situation of your web hosts? Would you still use FP if I chose a PHP5-only feature for future development?

hi, nice to find news on flatpress here! i just managed to convince my local provider to FINALLY have PHP5 and PHP4 on his server.. i do not really ’speak’ PHP but i found several very interesting cms solutions with amazing wysiwyg features written in PHP.. i will look at the development of flatpress too, so keep on coding ;o)

Up in the north ( living in Sweden :P ) the hosting companies have allready moved on to PHP5 so here it isn’t a problem with dropped support for the old version.
( A decent one has 5.2.1, and a cheapy one 5.0.5 at a glance… ) Did I say that Flatpress is great btw? :)

PHP5 is pretty much a default is most places now. Probably at some point in the near future it would be worth just focussing on developing in version 5.
I use flatpress on one of my sites with:
PHP 5.1.6 + XCache v1.2.2
Lighttpd 1.4.19-1

NoWhereMan, hosters had 3 years to upgrade, if we developers continue to develop for PHP4 then PHP5 will never be on!
Sorry for users which have PHP4 but the progress can’t be stopped for idiot which don’t want to upgrade their servers.

I have not a own server, my sites are hosted on my provider.
Apache/1.3.34
PHP Version 4.4.8
I didn’t know what will happen if Flatpress only work with PHP 5. And also I didn’t know the time when my provider upgrade to PHP 5.
But if you need some features inside PHP 5, so change it. I will see what I can do to use Flatpress again :D

My WebHosting services just recently moved over to PHP5. I suspect that most Hosts are or will be on 5.x soon enough. As for my own private sites, I’ve always installed PHP 5.

I still need PHP4 (4.3.9 to be exact) and have no idea how long this will continue, but it does not surprise me that the same host that will not allow me to access a database does not have the current version of PHP. I hope that even as you build features that exploit PHP5’s capabilities, the program will remain usable for those of us in more backward environments.

On this place there a two domains of me with many “lab”-subdomains since five years. Many pages from there have links all around the world. Ok, I can move my domains to an other provider with PHP5, but I can’t tell nothing bad about my present provider.

Hi NoWhereMan, I think you should forget about php4 and making everything compatible with it and just develop for php5 because basically everyone has php5 and nobody uses php4 anymore. You could add more features and stuff if you used just php5 also because you wouldn’t have to worry about things not working in php4. You should REALLY just use php5 and forget php4.

Personally I run PHP 5, but I understand lots of ISP still offer PHP 4, so IMHO, 4 support should not be dropped, at least until PHP 6 is gold.

In my opinion, i would think it would be best to keep php4 & 5 because many flatpress users including me use php4, but then again lots of flatpress users are using php5. And like you said “I do care about users”, well you should keep both. I’t keeps everyone happy.

My own webspaces all use PHP5 but several providers here - especially those who bundle webspace with the internet account - still use PHP4. Lately I even stumbled over one with PHP 4.0.8 installed …
