With MIT you can take the code and do really whatever you want, even use it in proprietary software, while GPL “forces” you to release the source under the same conditions; GPL can link only to software licensed released under the same terms or less restrictive (like MIT, BSDv2, etc.).
So basically MIT says “do the heck you want”
