Archive of previous support forum is now available

The previous support forum gathered the FlatPress knowledge of more than a decade. So many helpful comments, clever hacks and useful suggestions! Sadly, due to technical difficulties, it wasn’t available since the new support forum went online - this was one year ago.

But fear not! Finally, this mighty source of wisdom is online again:

Login is not possible, everything is just read-only. The wisdom may remain untouched and enlighten us with every visit :)

Goodbye 2019, hello 2020!

The ending year 2019 was the year of the FlatPress comeback. Our revival plan worked quite well: Since February, we have the new FlatPress version 1.1 that brought FlatPress to current PHP versions. Also, FlatPress regained a lot of publicity, especially in Germany by being featured in the LinuxUser magazine and being listed on Heise Download, the biggest German software download portal.

One of my greatest pleasures was to see that the FlatPress community – you! – also got back together. I am very proud to take care of this little blogging engine that is being used, enjoyed and enhanced all over the world. Throughout the year, I have received a lot of bug reports and enhancement proposals, there were new plugins and themes, and sometimes I just got a little “Thank you”. This all tells me that FlatPress as self-hosted blogging engine still is important, even (or especially!) in times of huge walled-garden platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

I’m excited to see what 2020 will bring. Franah is working on a completely new admin panel which already looks awesome, and we still have a few issues to be taken care of. Also, Matthias keeps testing the heck out of FlatPress which always brings some little glitches to fix ;)
As in 2019, FlatPress still won’t change the world, but it will stay your reliable choice when it comes to easily-set-up, self-hosted, standard-compliant, great-looking blogging sites.

For the last days of 2019, I hope you all have a peaceful time whereever you are. Take some days off, visit your families, and don’t forget to take care of those who need it. And then have a great start into a successful new year 2020!

All the best

Blog / News / Project interna / Current project status

Current project status

Hi everyone,

here’s a little update on the current status of the FlatPress project.

FlatPress itself

Version 1.1 “Da capo” runs stable and doesn’t seem to have major bugs. (See the open issues on GitHub.) Thus, we can concentrate on overhauling language packs and plugins.
Also, there may be some SEO improvements to the default theme Leggero soon.

Support forum

Our new support forum got populated quite nicely. I am very happy to receive your feedback and suggestions on FlatPress! Also, there a lot of experienced users out there trying to answer incoming questions. Thank you all for supporting each other in this friendly and productive manner!

In order to prevent bot registrations, I changed the behaviour of the registration page. Please let me know if you experience problems registering.

Regarding the old support forum I have good news and bad news: Although I got the forum itself running again, I am still searching for the “everything is read-only” switch. (Vanilla experience, anyone?)
I’m still working on it - it would be great to have back this huge pool of FlatPress know-how.

Public relations

The German-speaking, Twitter-using FlatPressers may have noticed: FlatPress is now listed at Heise Download, one of the biggest German software portals. You are very welcome to rate FlatPress there.
If you know more of such software sites (in any language), please let them know about FlatPress! We still need to make FlatPress more visible to the world.

In retrospect …

In my first blog posting here on flatpress.org, I described my plan to stabilize the software and to revive the community. Although not as quick as I hoped, this seems to have worked quite well.
Thank you all for supporting me in any way!
Let us keep working together to maintain and evolve a great little blogging engine - that may not fit any need, but ours perfectly :)

Blog / Releases / FlatPress 1.1 “Da capo” is here!

FlatPress 1.1 “Da capo” is here!

2019-02-22_flatpressisalive.jpg

Hi all you FlatPress users out there!
I am more than happy to announce the release of FlatPress 1.1 “Da capo”.

For those who just can’t wait any longer: Proceed to download of FlatPress 1.1 “Da capo” (zip, 1.0 MiB)

What’s new?

As stated in this blog entry, the new release is not completely new software. But it’s the stable foundation for all upcoming developments.

The most important steps - PHP7 and HTTPS support - were already done with the previous “emergency” release 1.0.3.php7. Now with 1.1, we took the time to fix a few more things, and to clean up a little bit. The BBCode toolbar has now graphical icons and knows a few more elements, some more languages are included, and a number of bugs and glitches have been fixed. Even one security fix is on board.

Please see the changelog for a complete list of changes.

“Da capo”?

Continuing the lovely tradition of naming FlatPress releases after music terms, I decided to go with Edoardo’s suggestion to call the new release “Da capo”.
That’s a well-matching name, since the FlatPress project was fallen asleep for more than three years, and is now revived with fresh energy. FlatPress is starting over again - or, as musicians put it: Da capo! :)

How does FlatPress continue from now on?

The FlatPress blogging engine will be evolved carefully, I do not plan to hastily stuff in crazy new things. Now that the stable release 1.1 is online, my main efforts will go into reviving the community. Coding will mainly be fixing bugs, refreshing outdated plugins et cetera.

What can you do?

As stated in my take-over posting, I can use every help I get.

  • Help me improving FlatPress.
Send me in every bug or glitch you encounter while working with FlatPress. If you are familiar with GitHub, don’t hesitate to create issues there.

Coders are very welcome to join the FlatPress team. If you have a bugfix or an enhancement for FlatPress, I’d be excited to receive your pull request on GitHub.

  • Join the community.
We have a great new support forum, but it’s still quite empty. Use it to ask your questions, meet other FlatPressers, introduce your plugins and themes, or show off the blog sites you created with FlatPress.
The most important thing for new FlatPress users is to find friendly help and support. Give them a warm welcome and answer their questions patiently - today’s newbies will be tomorrow’s pros.

Also, you can help us to update and complete the contents of our wiki. The information there may be outdated, or linked sites may be gone 404 in between.

  • Spread the word.
If you know a software archive or a CMS compare site that does not have FlatPress, tell them! Ask your web hosting provider if they’d like to offer FlatPress in their software installer. Recommend FlatPress to people asking you for an easy-to-use blogging engine.

After the last years of silence around the project, let’s remind the world of FlatPress again.
