Twitter, you used to be cool ๐Ÿ™„

Hi folks, you may or may not have noticed that we essentially stopped using Twitter.

What used to be a cool and open-minded place in the beginning, refreshingly free and almost a bit anarchistic, has turned into profit-driven attention machine. One may be fine with the ubiquitous advertising, well, someone has to pay the server bills! But do you really like being force-fed content by “the algorithmโ€ that Twitter wants you to see? Instead of content from the accounts you follow yourself? An algorithm, by the way, that is in no way neutral, and is constantly being manipulated to promote content of, say, a certain Mr. Musk?

None of this fits in at all with the principles of the FlatPress blogging engine and the values of the FlatPress project. Consequently, we finally discontinued our social media activities on Twitter.

But who needs Twitter anyway? Since 2021, the FlatPress project is part of the Fediverse! You find us at Mastodon:

If you’d like to stay up-to-date, just follow us there, fave, boost, and spread the word.

And if you happen to still be active on Twitter, you might want to join us in leaving greedy โ€œbig techโ€ and starting over in a free, open-minded and non-commercial environment.

Or to say it with our last tweet:

Twitter used to be cool ๐Ÿ™„

I’m more than happy to announce the first Release Candidate of FlatPress 1.4 “Notturno”!

The general look and feel of FlatPress 1.4 hasn’t changed too much compared to 1.3 - it’s all the small details that were improved:

  • With an updated Smarty template engine, FlatPress now supports PHP up to 8.4.
  • We fixed quite a lot of bugs and possible security issues (thanks to all the reporters!).
  • Numerous small enhancements made it into FlatPress, such as as freely choosable blog author name, the ability to change the Admin credentials more easily, or the removal of unwanted metadata from uploaded images.
  • Since the PhotoSwipe plugin became the default for displaying images, the old LightBox plugin was removed - you still find it in our FlatPress Extras repository.
  • The newly added GDPR Video embed plugin provides a simple two-click solution for GDPR-compliant embedding of YouTube, Facebook and Vimeo videos.

Please see the release information on GitHub to find the detailed change log, a download package and an update package from FlatPress 1.3:

Please help testing

If you happen to find the time, please help us testing this current version. Try a fresh installation, or update a testing copy of your existing blog.
Please report any bugs and glitches on the FlatPress support forum, create an issue on GitHub or simply send us an email. Thank you!
If no further bugs are reported throughout the testing phase, this version will soon be released as the final version 1.4.

This is a release candidate. Although it’s very likely what will become the final release, you may not want to use it on your productive blog yet.

What about the name, “Notturno”?

Since music pieces written (or typically performed) at night time are sometimes called “Nocturnes” (listen to a famous one), the release name “Notturno” is a tribute to all the night shifts Fraenkiman worked for FlatPress 1.4 - thank you very, very much, mate!

Also thanks to all of you out there reporting bugs and possible security problems. You make FlatPress so much better!

All the best,
Arvid
